Guykuḏas Aquarium

Guykuḏa Munuŋgurr lives on the Djapu homeland of Garrthalala and the Dha`waŋu clan homeland at Gurrumuru in north-east Arnhem Land. The region includes estuaries and coral reefs, big rivers and ocean. This familiarity allows him to shape these sculptures from memory not from images from life.

Guykuḏa's Aquarium fish species are associated to Ancestral Creation of the Homelands.

Guykuḏa Munuŋgurr is ground-breaking by pushing the cultural boundaries of revealing sacred Yolŋu law Rangga or sacred objects. Culturally totems shapes are never to be revealed and their shape can only be guessed at. The artists’ works displays are what would be manifestations of what would be their natural form or character.
