HistoryImperial Japanese troops invaded and captured Buna on the north coast of Papua New Guinea on 21–22 July 1942 during WWII. Australian and United States forces counterattacked from 16 November 1942 driving the Japanese out of Buna on 2 January 1943. The US Fifth Air Force then used the Buna air bases for the Allied counter-offensive against Japan in particular to isolate the major Japanese base at Rabaul and attack Lae and points west.
