HistoryOn 15 August 1945 the Japanese Government accepted the Allied terms of surrender. Areas stil under its military control had to be transferred to the the military control of Allied forces until civilian adminstrations could take over. Australia was assigned the eastern part of the Dutch East Indies on the formal Japanese surrender on 2 September ending WWII. Its forces were tasked with accepting the surrender of Japanese forces and their removal, locating and destroying Japanese war material, aiding Allied war internees and prisoners of war and investigating Japanese war crimes. Lt-Col R.A.C. Muir was the commander of the Menado Force sent to Sulawezi, HMAS GLENELG was part of that force. The force arrived at Manado on 14 September 1945 and set about evacuating Dutch internees to Morotai, the centre of Australian operations.
