DescriptionThis series of 30 items was collected by Mr Herbert Edward Young for Young's Maritime Museum. They were donated in 1972 to the Commonwealth Government for incorporation into a future maritime museum. The items span the period 1884 - 1969.HistoryThe collection consists of seven Engineer's log books for the vessels SS MOKOIA, SS MONOWAI, SS MARAMA, MV KOOTARA, MV WANAKA, MV RISDON; three Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand Limited Hull specification of a single screw motor cargo vessel books, three instruction books and one set of Officer regulations; one Royal Australian Navy Hydrographic Service chart index; one set of newspaper clippings; one set of capacity plans for ships; one Centenary Maritime Exhibition booklet; one Cape Horner XXV Aich Congress Oslo booklet; one Royal Australian Navy: Golden Jubilee 1911 - 1961 booklet; two capacity plan books; three sets of ship logs for SS MONOWAI and Walker's ships; one docking book; one Chief Officer's Memoranda book; one souvenir book of the H M Australian Fleet; on TSS MAKARINI prayer book; and one book titled 'Bully Hayes: an Authentic Life of William Henry Hayes' written by A T Saunders. Herbert Edward (Bert) Young assembled a collection of maritime objects, books, papers, images and ephemera, and established Young's Maritime Museum from his home in Forestville, a suburb of Sydney, in the late 1960s. This private museum was short-lived and in 1972, Young presented his collection to the Department of Shipping and Transport to hold for incorporation into a future national maritime museum. The collection was transferred to the ANMM in 1987.
