DescriptionThese 42 items were collected by Herbert Edward Young for Young's Maritime Museum. They were donated in 1972 to the Commonwealth Government for incorporation into a future maritime museum. The items consist of menus, certificates of discharge and competency, plans, charts, magazine articles, reports and correspondence for the period 1832 - 1969.HistoryThe series consists of one report on the grounding of the barque CASHMERE; one serviette from the AWATEA; one prospectus for the Australian Nautical Exhibition and Museum Company Limited; one set of programs from the HIMALAYA; one poster titled 'The Story of Captain Cook'; one postcard from AMOKURA; one set of plans and papers for MV KAROON; one plan of 'BE' design from the Union Steam Ship Company Limited; a number of newspaper clippings relating to Young's Maritime Museum; one Menu from the Fourteenth Annual Dinner of the Company of Master Mariners of Australia; set of menus from RMMS AORANGI; three sets of ship plans; one list of ships belonging to the Port of Sydney; one history of the White Star Line; one brief history of the passenger services of the Union Company; one list of vessels owned by the Pioneers and the Port Jackson Steamships Company; one boarding pass for SS NESTOR; one certificate of discharge and one certificate of competency for James Gaby; one form of service; on Sydney Harbour ferries information statement; one information table; one letter about the history of the Burns Philp Line; one letter and poems from Captain Jim Gaby; one letter addressed to Captain Neitenstein from the Colonial Secretary's Office; one Woman's Day article; one article relating to old ship models; one article relating to the building of the Queen Mary; one photograph of a souvenir program; four invitations addressed to Captain Neitenstein; one set of seventeen certificates of discharge for John H Allan; one set of eight certificates of discharge for V G Fitzgerald; one document titled 'The Lamps and Signposts of the Sea Roads'; and three hydrographic charts for New South Wales and discoveries made by Captain James Cook. Herbert Edward (Bert) Young assembled a collection of maritime objects, books, papers, images and ephemera, and established Young's Maritime Museum from his home in Forestville, a suburb of Sydney, in the late 1960s. This private museum was short-lived and in 1972, Young presented his collection to the Department of Shipping and Transport to hold for incorporation into a future national maritime museum. The collection was transferred to the ANMM in 1987.
