DescriptionA 24 page programme for the Inter-State Eight Oar Sculling Championships of Australia, held on the Parramatta River on 13 May, 1905 by the New South Wales Rowing Association. The cover features and illustration of women watching a regatta race and the information contained within includes race officials, crews listing, programme of events, etc. The race was won by Victoria, followed by Tasmania then New South Wales. History"The race was well rowed, free of any trouble, a throughly good contest, in which every crew gained the place its merits had earned. The consistant form of the crews was most remarkable, and with the exception of Queensland, they never faltered during this most severe and gruelling contest. The time is very fast, and the latter part of the course was covered at a rate almost equal to the first mile... marked an epoch in rowing." - Sydney Morning Herald, 15 May 1905.SignificanceRowing regattas were immensely popular during the 19th Century. It was a spectacle open to everyone, suited Australia's growing love of the outdoors and their particular reverence for sporting competitions from "home".
