DescriptionThis machine embroidered black and yellow commemorative badge features a kangaroo crest and inscription reading 'Royal Australian Navy Helicopter Flight Vietnam'. In 1967, the Australian 723 Navy squadron unit joined with the American 135th Assault Helicopter Company and were responsible for the tactical air movement of combat troops, supplies and equipment in operations.HistoryIn October 1967 the Australian Government sent the 723 Squadron from the Royal Australian Navy's Fleet Air Arm to Vietnam where they joined with the US 135th Assault Helicopter Company. This merged unit was known as EMU, Experimental Military Unit and they created their own motto, 'Get the bloody job done'. This unit suffered a much higher casualty rate than any other naval or aviation unit in the Vietnam War. SignificanceThis sleeve badge is associated with the Royal Australian Navy unit Squadron 723 which suffered a high casualty rate in the Vietnam War. It illustrates the role of the Fleet Air Arm in combat.
