'Treasure Island' was based on the 1881 Robert Louis Stevenson adventure novel and was generally well received on its release. The quintessential story of pirates and treasure, the novel and film captured the public's ongoing fascination with maritime adventure stories. The dangers, thrills and romance of pirates and shipwrecks was a perfect story to be translated on the screen and this 1934 production was just one 50 adaptations to date.SignificanceThe film 'Treasure Island' was a thrilling combination of established literature and Hollywood glamour. The idea of swashbuckling pirates, lost treasure and high-sea adventures were a long established maritime narrative.
