DescriptionThis drawing documents the four design options for the cove and starboard lines of the Halvorsen yacht GRETEL. The designs are rendered in black and gold ink, and accompanied by the design lables 'Dolphin', 'Dwelling's Sword', 'Neptune's Trident' and 'Southern Cross'. The upper right corner carries a side banner which is decorated with a gold and red Australian Coat of Arms, with the text 'Reputation Sydney'. Underneath, a handwritten note signed by Jack Earl reads 'Cove Line and Sternboard Design suggestions as requested by Alan Payne. December 1961 for 12 metre yacht "Gretel I"'. HistoryThe Halvorsen family built 1299 vessels in Sydney from 1925 until 2006, when the Sydney operations stopped. These included timber cabin cruisers, hire launches, motor yachts, wartime work boats, tugs, police boats, fishing boats and mission boats. The Halvorsen name is, however, most commonly associated with motor launches and power craft characterised by a white timber hull, elegant lines, varnished timber and trims. The designs for the Halvorsen yacht GRETEL were created by Jack Earl, who was a founding member of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and raced in the first Sydney-Hobart yacht race. He is a noted maritime artist and adventurer, perhaps best known for his circumnavigation of the world in KATHLEEN GILLETT. SignificanceThe cove line and sternboard designs are an important record of the planning stages of an often long and complicated boat building process.
