DescriptionThis sculpture by Aurukun artist Jubilee Wolmby is of a freshwater shark. The white dots on the upper body represent air bubbles adhering to the sharkskin as it moves through the water.HistoryArtist's statement: The story of the freshwater shark Two Apalech brothers speared a shark one day. They cut open the shark's stomach and took out all the baby sharks in order to feed everyone in the camp. After the baby sharks were taken out, the shark's stomach was sewn up with hibiscus string (okan). Everyone sang a song and danced to help keep the shark alive. The shark then swam away. The next time the shark is caught, its stomach will be cut open again and more baby sharks will be taken out and eaten by everyone.
