DescriptionThis travel poster promotes Queensland as the 'Holiday State' of Australia, a reflection of the state's popularity as the ideal holiday destination.HistoryQueensland tourism continued to promote beaches and popular attractions such as the Great Barrier Reef in the 1950s. The winter migration of tourists from Victoria and New South Wales to the warmer climate of Queensland proved a lucrative market, and these posters were aimed at this demographic. Beach iconography was both popular and persuasive and used in national and state tourism campaigns. In 1907 the Queensland Government Intelligence and Tourist Bureau was established as a sub-department of the Chief Secretary's Office, after various name changes in 1945-1946 the board became known as the Queensland Government Tourist Bureau. The primary focus of the Tourist Bureau was the promotion of tourism within Australia and it was responsible for producing brochures, encouraging improved standards in accommodation and service and providing a subsidy scheme to promote local areas.SignificanceDestinations were central themes to most travel posters and an emphasis was placed on tourist sites and regions such as the popular and iconic Queensland coast-line. This poster is representative of the trend to encourage interstate travel to the domestic traveller.
