DescriptionThis is one of 11 watercolour drawings produced by Tiffanie Brown for the Royal Australian Navy publication, 'Australian Centenary History of Defence Volume III'. It consists of a cut-away drawing of the first Collins class submarine, HMAS COLLINS detailing the various compartments and elements of the submarines which replaced the Oberon class.HistoryHMAS COLLINS is a Collins class submarine built in August 1993 and commissioned on 27 July 1996. It is now based in Perth, Western Australia. The vessel was named after Admiral Sir John Collins, who commanded HMAS SYDNEY II to victory in the Mediterranean during World War II. COLLINS was one of the first submarines to be designed completely with computers, featuring three diesel powered batteries to generate electricity that allow it to move through the water quietly and undetected. The stealth capabilities of HMAS COLLINS make it ideal for special covert operations.SignificanceThis watercolour represents the Royal Australian Navy submarine HMAS COLLINS, highlighting the design elements such as the torpedo tubes, weapon storage compartments, domestic service space, control room, engine and main visible motor.
