DescriptionA map from the 'Atlas Universal of the Pacific Ocean With a Division of Oceania by Peoples after Captain Dumont d'Urville'. It is titled 'Division de l'Oceanie par peuples d'apres Mr. le Capit.ne d'Urville' [Division of Oceania by peoples after Captain d'Urville]: Orange Malaisie [Malays] ; Pink Melanesie [Melanesians]; Yellow Polynesie [Polynesians]; Blue Micronesie [Micronesians]. At lower right corner is an inset map of the British settlements in New South Wales titled 'Details des establissements Anglais dans Nouvelle Galles Meridonale' (' Details of English Establishments in New South Wales Meridonale') showing Sydney and environs. Australia is marked 'Australie ou Nouvelle Hollande' and features Terre Baudin in South Australia and Terre Grant in Victoria.HistoryThe map by Andriveau Goujon (J.) shows Australia and surounding islands with divisions representing the different races of the region. These boundaries are based on the ethnographic system divised by Dumont d'Urville as a result of his 1826-1829 expedition in the ASTROLABE, and the 1837-1840 expedition of the ASTROLABE and ZELEE. An account of the second voyage was published in Paris in 1841 - 'Voyage au Pole Sud at dans l'Oceanie' together with Atlas Pittoresque containing illustrations of the places and people met during the voyage. The ANMM collection contains several engravings from this work depicting the costumes of islanders - see for example 00031485, 00031492, 00031483 and 00003619. SignificanceThe depiction of racial boundaries represents a direct link in the European interpretation of race and ethnicity - first begun with the word lists collected by naturalists aboard the ships of Byron, Wallis, Cook and Bougainville and relates to the portraits of indiginous people drawn during these and later voyages.
