DescriptionThis image depicts a view of Brisbane near Ann Street. The Hotel Canberra is visible to the lower right, which was built in 1927 at the intersection of Edward and Ann Steets. This photograph forms part of a panoramic view of the city that Hood shot in 1930. The panorama was published in the Melbourne newspaper 'The Australasian' on 15 November 1930 on page 28. It is possible that the panorama was shot from the Observatory, at Wickham Terrace, Brisbane.SignificanceThe Samuel J Hood photographic collection records an extensive range of maritime activity on Sydney Harbour, including sail and steam ships, crew portraits, crews at work, ship interiors, stevedores loading and unloading cargo, port scenes, pleasure boats and harbourside social activities from the 1890s through to the 1950s. They are also highly competent artistic studies and views - Hood was regarded as an important figure in early Australian photojournalism. Hood’s maritime photographs are one of the most significant collections of such work in Australia.
