DescriptionThis gilt bronze medallion was produced to celebrate the Australian Bicentennial in 1988. Produced specifically for Navy Week it features YOUNG ENDEAVOUR on one side and HMAS DARWIN on the verso.HistoryThe Royal Australian Navy uses the brigantine rigged YOUNG ENDEAVOUR to teach young men and women the technical skills required to sail a square-rigged vessel, including helming, navigation, rope handling, working aloft and command. The YOUNG ENDEAVOUR Youth Scheme is designed to develop teamwork, leadership and communication skills, work with disadvantaged youth, and meet people from around the country. The tall ship was a gift from the United Kingdom to the Government and people of Australia to mark the Bicentenary in 1988. HMAS DARWIN is a long-range escort Adelaide class frigate whose roles include area air defence, anti-submarine warfare, surveillance, reconnaissance and interdiction. The ship is capable of countering simultaneous threats from the air, surface and sub-surface. The other frigates of this class include HMA Ships ADELAIDE, CANBERRA, SYDNEY, MELBOURNE and NEWCASTLE. HMAS DARWIN has been deployed to the Persian Gulf five times in 1990, 1991, 1992, 2002 and 2004; and was deployed to East Timor (Timor-Leste) in 1999 and also involved in operations in the Solomon Islands in 2001. SignificanceThis medallion celebrates the Australian Bicentennial of 1988, the gift of YOUNG ENDEAVOUR from Britain to Australia in 1988, and 200 years of naval support and protection in Australian waters.
