DescriptionThe export of pewter ware was one of a variety of materials China traded during the 19th century. This tray is engraved with a design of peonies and two four-clawed dragons fighting above rolling waves. It was produced by Kut Hing in Shantou (Swatow), one of the major towns involved in the exportation of pewter.HistoryThe oldest known deposits of tin are in Asia and pewterware was first produced in China from about 200 B.C. The most prolific pewterers were based in Shantou (Swatow) This large coastal town and seaport was one of the main centres for the export of pewterware in large quantities to the Western world during the 19th century. Swatow pewter was first offered around 1885 and it is typically fairly thick and heavy. This piece may date around 1895-1900.SignificanceThis tray is a fine example of 19th century Chinese craftmanship for oversaesn export. Although designed for foreign tastes it incorporates Chinese themes and influences in the design.
