DescriptionRoyal Doulton limited edition jug depicting Captain Arthur Phillip. Designed by Charles Noke and Harry Fenton in 1938. Hand painted with relief moulding, the jug depicts Captain Phillip and officers toasting the British flag after the arrival of the First Fleet in Sydney Cove.HistoryCharles Noke, Art Director at Royal Doulton, was responsible for the concept of producing limited edition series presentation pieces based on popular subjects such as fox hunts, coronations, literary figures and famous seamen. Harry Fenton was Noke's most accomplished assistant and the signatures of both men are found throughout the series. Arthur Phillip (1738-1814) entered the navy in 1755 and was rated Post Captain in 1786. He was subsequently ranked Commodore of the fleet of eleven ships carrying the first European settlers to Australia. Once the fleet arrived and disembarked the settlers at Sydney Cove, Phillip took supreme control as the first Governor of the colony of New South Wales. He retained the position until 1792 when Captain John Hunter was appointed Governor.
