DescriptionA passenger list issued by Cook's Nile Service on the PS RAMESES III which sailed from the Assiut, which is located on the River Nile, on January 17th 1914.
The opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 helped usher in the steam age to Egypt and originally Thomas Cook & Son were the sole agents for Nile passenger-steamship service.
HistoryIn 1869, after the opening of the Suez Canal, Thomas Cook hired two steamers from the King of Egypt and conducted his first party up the Nile. Within 10 years he was developing his own fleet there and were originally the sole agents for Nile passenger-steamship service.
In addition to the fleet, Cook also built hotels, restaurants and guest houses along the route. Even ensuring places of interest were opened, cleared and accessible for their paying customers.
The ships were as comfortable as a luxurious hotel and the itinerary for travellers was organised to encompass the sights along the Nile and rest days aboard the vessel - enjoying the serenity of the outdoor deck area and the company of the other wealthy travellers.
SignificanceIn the late 19th century, a winter cruise on the Nile was one of the most glamorous social events of the season. Thomas Cook led the way and was soon followed by other lines. The mix of luxury, climate, history and the 'exotic' proved irresistible to those travellers bored with European tours.
