DescriptionTallies are attached around a sailor's cap and identify the ship in which they serve. This partial tally from HMAS FREMANTLE is machine embroidered on black cloth. FREMANTLE played an active role as a minesweeper during World War II.HistoryHMAS FREMANTLE (I) was one of 60 Bathurst class minesweepers (usually known as a corvette). It was built in Australia and commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy on 24 March 1943. The ship's first assignment of the war was to act as an escort vessel along Australia's east coast. FREMANTLE served as an escort vessel in Darwin and New Guinea and then underttok minesweeping operations with the 21st Minesweeping Flotilla in Chinese waters. After the war HMAS FREMANTLE was paid off into the Reserve Fleet in January 1946. From 1952 FREMANTLE was used for training purposes and as a fisheries protection vessel with the pearling fleet in the Arafura Sea. It also conducted survey and general fleet duties until it was paid off in Sydney in 1959 and sold on 6 January 1961 to be broken up. The second RAN vessel to carry the name was the lead ship of the Fremantle class of patrol boats. It served 1980-2006.SignificanceThis cap tally comes from the Royal Australian Navy's HMAS FREMANTLE.
