DescriptionMade in Australia by Golden Breed, shirts like this were surfing-inspired versions of the popular 1950s Hawaiian 'aloha' shirt. Golden Breed specialised in surf wear in the 1970s with a range of shirts, boardshorts and 'sloppy joes' targeted at surfers.HistoryBy the mid 1970s the Australian surfing industry was booming. Torquay had become the base for companies such as Rip Curl, Quicksilver, Dive 'N' Surf and Piping Hot. Many surfers became commercial board makers, using contestants to showcase their new designs as well as their surfing skill. In 1973 Rip Curl sponsored the Easter event at Bells Beach and Australian surfing went professional. At the same time, the image of surfing as rebellious and carefree has ensured the street popularity and market appeal of surf wear.SignificanceThis shirt documents Australian surfing history during the 1970s.
