Torquay had become the base for companies such as Rip Curl, Quicksilver, Dive 'N' Surf and Piping Hot. Many surfers became commercial board makers, using contestants to showcase their new designs as well as their surfing skill.
In 1973 Rip Curl sponsored the Easter event at Bells Beach and Australian surfing went professional.
