DescriptionTHOMAS W LAWSON, a seven masted, steel hulled schooner built for the Pacific trade, but used primarily to haul coal and oil along the East Coast of the United States. The design of THOMAS W LAWSON was an ultimately unsuccessful bid to keep sailing ships competitive with the burgeoning steamship freight transport trade and was wrecked in the Scilly Isles in 1907 during a storm.SignificanceThe THOMAS W LAWSON was the largest seven masted, steel hulled schooner ever built without an auxiliary engine.
