DescriptionThis fire and waterproof naval jacket was used during World War II as part of a two piece fighting rig known as a Fearnought suit. It was made by Hardie Rubber Company out of white wool. It was used by the Royal Australian Navy and worn with long pants, gloves and a hood to provide over all protection.HistoryNaval uniforms form part of the history of the people who wore them, the places they were and what tasks they undertook. In this case, the history of the protective clothing worn during World War II is shown through this jacket, although the weight and texture of the material made the jacket uncomfortable to wear it did provide a safer and dryer working environment. Similar material is still used by the Navy today but in a one piece coverall fashion. Order Number 280 from the Commonwealth Navy Orders 1943 states that the authorised allowance of protective clothing of fire and repair parties on board HMA Ships is one set for each member of the fire and repair parties. Ships with insufficient stowage accommodation were to carry the maximum sets possible.
