DescriptionAn ink and watercolur on paper by Anne Greenhill depicting cargo loading facilities at Pyrmont, likely at the Colonial Sugar Refining (CSR) refinery.HistoryThe CSR Sugar Refinery started building at Pyrmont of the Sydney foreshore in 1875 after the company had decided to, move its operation from the suburban area of Chippendale. Pyrmont suited the proposed large factory as it was a highly industrial area and had a long history of dealing with processing raw materials, manufacturing and maritime works and its proximity to the city and harbour served the needs of CSR. The CSR prescient grew to include large sugar refineries, a distillery and a caneinte works and employed thousands of workers - both local and those who commuted to the area. CSR operated on the site up until 1995 having moved primarily into the production and supply of building materials. The area is now a residential complex.SignificanceThis watercolour by Anne Greenhill is significant in depicting a working wharf and surrounding industrial landscape of an area that is now primarily residential.
