DescriptionThis collection is comprised of paper based material relating to the naval career of Captain Leonard Norman Dine between 1925 and 1971. It includes letters, certificates, charts, naval flimsies, pamphlets, photocopied notes and Captain Dine's business card.HistoryLeonard Norman Dine was born on 11 September 1910 and grew up in Randwick, New South Wales. He was educated at the Royal Australian Naval College (RANC) and went on to study at the Royal Naval Engineering College in Keyham, Leicestershire, England. Dine returned to the RANC, and between 1926 and 1928 he won prizes for Physics, Chemistry and Seamanship. Dine became a Midshipman in 1929, a Sub-Lieutenant in 1932, Lieutenant in 1933, Lieutenant-Commander in 1941 where he served aboard PERTH, NEPAL, SHROPSHIRE and BATAAN. In 1947, he became a Commander and during 1950 was Department Director Naval Construction and Naval Liaison Staff, London, England. Dine was an Engineer Officer aboard HMS VENGEANCE from 1950 to1953 and Acting Captain Fleet Engineer Officer to the Australian Fleet during 1954-1956 during which time he became Captain. Dine was appointed General Manager of HMA Naval Dockyard in Williamstown in Victoria 1957 until 1961 when he retired. Leonard Norman Dine died 6 November 1992, aged 81.SignificanceThis material provides insight into life in the Royal Australian Navy through the experiences of Captain Leonard Norman Dine. Captain Dine served on many different ships of the RAN each of which contributed to protecting Australia and allied countries during peace and war.
