DescriptionTin painted tin badge dating from World War II. The pin depicts a vessel sailing through the water, above the image the slogan reads: "MERCHANT NAVY DAY/ 6d [six pence]".HistoryThe badges are examples of a range of similar articles produced during World War II (1939-1945), to raise money for 'comfort funds' for troops, seamen and other people involved in the war effort. They were produced by volunteer committees who ran welfare projects for the various services and for merchant seamen away from their home ports.SignificanceBackground information from conversation with Paddy O'Brien of I S Wright Militaria who deals in these badges as collectibles.
