DescriptionA black and white photograph titled 'Aberdeen Liner MORAVIAN leaving Sydney with troops for the Transvaal January 17th 1900'. The image depicts MORAVIAN as it pulls away from a wharf in Woolloomooloo Bay with the New South Wales contingent for the Boer War on board. Printed on mount below image 'Aberdeen liner MORAVIAN leaving Sydney with troops for the Transvaal January 17th 1900'. Modern print from an earlier negative. HistoryLaunched in 1899 by the Aberdeen White Star Line, she was a 4,573 gross ton ship, length 118.96m x beam 14.32m, clipper bows, one funnel, three masts (rigged for sail), single screw and a speed of 13 knots. There was accommodation for 50-1st and 650-3rd class passengers. Built by Robert Napier & Sons, Glasgow, she was delivered to the Aberdeen Line in January 1899. Her accommodation was said not to be luxurious, but homely and comfortable and she was one of the last passenger steamers to be square rigged. Her maiden voyage from London to Australia started on 14 February 1899 and her final voyage for the company started on 7 October 1913. She was sold to the Bombay & Persia SN Co in February 1914 and renamed "Akbar", at which time her main mast was removed and wireless was fitted. She was scrapped at Genoa in 1923.SignificanceThe MORAVIAN was transporting the second contingent of the New South Wales Army Medical Corps and the third draft of the New South Wales Lancers to their units already in action against the Boer forces then fighting in South Africa.
