HistoryHMAS AUSTRALIA is shown at Garden Island, Sydney a year after it was built by John Brown & Co Ltd of Clydebank, Scotland. This County class heavy cruiser served in the Royal Australian Navy until 1956, seeing service in Australian waters, the Indian Ocean, the north and south Atlantic oceans, the south-west Pacific and the Coral Sea. The cruiser was paid off in 1954 and broken up at Barrow-in-Furness, UK in 1956.
HMS TUMULT is photographed on the Woolloomoolooo side of the Garden Island Dockyard moored alongside an unidentified sister ship of the same T class destroyers. Having served in the Atlantic, Aegean, and Mediterranean, TUMULT sailed for Sydney in June 1945 to deploy as part of the British Pacific Fleet. The destroyer is shown in Sydney in December 1945.
HM Ships INDEFATIGABLE, INDOMITABLE and VENERABLE are photographed at Garden Island Dockyard in Sydney in December 1945 when all three aircraft carriers were part of the British Pacific Fleet, sent to the Far East as war with Europe came to an end.
