DescriptionInvitation from Royal Australian Navy Vice Admiral Russ Shalders AO, CSC to attend a National Memorial Service for HMAS SYDNEY II, St Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney, 24 April 2008.HistoryHMAS SYDNEY (II) was performing duties as a convoy escort in Western Australian waters during World War II. It was here that the vessel fell foul of the German raider HSK KORMORAN on 19 November 1941. An enormous battle ensued which resulted in both vessels sinking, all 645 SYDNEY men were lost, and 317 KORMORAN survivors were picked up. Memorial services have been regularly held to commemorate the loss.
