DescriptionThis off-the-shoulder patterned silk swimsuit was made in Australia for David Jones. The loose fitting style has an elasticised drawstring waist and bloomer-style pants with elasticised legs. The original sales label is still attached, reading "sunshine colony swimsuit designed and manufactured by david jones' to give you comfort and attraction in and out of the water. Each suit has been tested for its durability and reaction to water and sunshine. We sincerely believe that it will bring you many hours of pleasure." HistoryIn the 1950s and early 1960s swimsuits and sunsuits were often shaped with paneling and built-in supports in order to create a curvaceous, ultra-feminine silhouette that emphasised the bust, waistline and hips. As the 1960s progressed swimsuits became less structured. Designs became more focused on comfort. This change was influenced by the new synthetics that were stretchier and offered greater freedom to the wearer. SignificanceThe silk swimsuit reflects a flamboyant era in Australian beachwear fashions in the 1950s and 60s where designers experimented with new patterns, prints and textures.
