DescriptionThis early 19th century engraving of the Royal Docks at Deptford on the river Thames shows two vessels in frame on the slipways and the sheer hulk (used for raising and lowering masts) is prominent in the middle ground.HistoryThe Royal Docks at Deptford on the river Thames are particularly associated with Captain Cook's voyages and it was there that the ENDEAVOUR, RESOLUTION, ADVENTURE and DISCOVERY were surveyed and fitted out prior to each expedition. The BOUNTY was also fitted out at Deptford and the location continues to have great significance for mariners. Engraved by William Cooke, this view was published in Views of the Thames, London, 1819.SignificanceAll of Cook's expedition ships were fitted out at the Royal Docks at Deptford and this engraving illustrates the working life of the area in the early 19th century.
