DescriptionThe passenger list is a souvenir from Mr R Toplis' cruise from Sydney to Auckland and Wellington on the Aberdeen & Commonwealth liner TSS ESPERANCE BAY in December 1936.HistoryThe Aberdeen & Commonwealth liner ESPERANCE BAY was originally built as HOBSONS BAY by Vickers, Barrow in 1921. It was renamed ESPERANCE BAY after the original ESPERANCE BAY was transferred to Shaw Savill in 1936 and renamed ARAWA. ESPERANCE BAY was converted to an armed merchant cruiser during World War II and used as a troopship. In 1947 it was refitted to accommodate 514 tourist class passengers and resumed service between the UK and Australia. It was scrapped at Faslane in 1955.SignificanceThe ESPERANCE BAY passenger list contains information that provides an insight into facilities, activities and entertainments onboard the Aberdeen & Commonwealth liner in the 1930s.
