DescriptionA foghorn operated by attached hand-pumped bellows. HistoryThis ship's foghorn is constructed with a copper horn with brass fittings. It is attached to a timber and leather hand-bellows. The foghorn is engraved Triton, Allday and Onions, Birmingham. Nineteenth and early twentieth century foghorns were produced in varous ways. This simple hand-bellows system was a portable, common and robust variation.SignificanceThis is an excellent example of a hand-bellows operated ships foghorn, a common form of foghorn used on small vessels.
