DescriptionOil painting on board of the BENANDRA by John Allcot.HistoryThe BENANDRA (345 gross tons, Lbd: 130' x 30' x 9'7") was a wooden twin screw steamship, built in 1913 by Morrison and Sinclair at Balmain, Sydney for the Illawarra & South Coast S N Co. The BENANDRA had a limited passenger capacity mainly transporting timber and general cargo along the eastern seaboard. It was wrecked on the Moruya Heads bar, New South Wales on the 25th March 1924 with one life lost.
SignificanceJohn Allcot was a well respected marine painter, known for his impressionistic oil paintings and watercolours of shipping of all kinds, both contemporary and historic. He often depicted vessels entering or sailing on Sydney Harbour.
