DescriptionThis screen printed cloth competitor's badge was made for use at the Fourth Australian Surfboard Championships held at Bells Beach, Victoria over Easter 1967.HistoryThe Fourth Australian Surfboard Championships were held over a week at Bells Beach, Victoria in April 1967, with the final being held on Easter Sunday. Contest Director Tony Olsen used the championships to test new ideas, introducing a three round tournament as used in the United States of America. Contestants included Midget Farrelly, Wayne Lynch, Butch Cooney, Kevin Parkinson, Nat Young, Gail Couper, Keith Paul, Peter Drouyan, Robert Brown and Russell Hughes. Nat Young won the Men's final, Malcolm Sanders the Senior Men's final and Wayne Lynch the Junior Men's final. The competition was filmed by the ABC.SignificanceThe badge is a good example of early surfing competition memorabilia for the late 1960s, a time when surfing competitions still had amateur status and before a professional surfing competition was developed in Australia.
