DescriptionHandmade boat gripe - a simple form of clamp used in boat building, composed of an inner core of woven rope sewn into a canvas cover which is painted white but very faded and cracked. Both ends of the gripe feature a thick woven rope loop, one has a metal eyelet in its centre.History
SignificanceThe gripe is typical of wooden boat construction equipment and demonstrates sailing technology and crafts. It is an excellent example of rope and canvas work.
