DescriptionThis 1:100 scale shipbuilders model is of the Howard Smith limited bulk coal carrier motor vessel HOWARD SMITH.HistoryMV HOWARD SMITH (III) was a limited bulk coal carrier of 26,519 tonnes built in 1981. It was sold to India Cements Ltd, Madras in 1992 and renamed LCL JAYAMA KONDON. The vessel operated for Howard Smith Pty Ltd, Melbourne, a company that grew out of the Melbourne Steamship Company and was created in 1854 by Captain William Howard Smith. The company was involved in the transportation of passengers and cargo to the Australian goldfields. By 1883 the company owned sixteen steamships and one sailing ship. In 1901 it became Howard Smith Company Ltd and in 1914 changed to Howard Smith Limited. By 1914 the fleet had grown to thirty seven ships, and a large majority of these served in World War I. Howard Smith Limited still continues to operate on the Australian stock exchange. SignificanceThis ship model is representative of MV HOWARD SMITH and its role as a coal carrier in Australian waters.
