DescriptionThis archive series consists of nine volumes of working and proof copies of publications written by John Bastock. Three volumes relate to 'Ships on the Australia Station' which was published by Child & Associates, Frenchs Forest in 1988, and six relate to 'Australia's Ships of War' published by Angus and Robertson, Sydney in 1975. The volumes consist of individual entries for each vessel accompanied by an illustration or photograph, vessel specifications, service history, and an outline of history and career.HistoryJohn Bastock's books 'Ships on the Australia Station' (1990) and 'Australia's Ships of War' (1975) are two of the most sought-after reference books relating to Australian naval history. The first looks at the ships of Britain's Royal Navy that were sent to the Australia Station to protect the fledgling colonies, including New Zealand. In 1991, John Bastock donated to the museum 15 of his original oil paintings that he completed as illustrations for this book. His second book remains one of the best reference works on ships of the Royal Australian Navy from 1911 to 1975 when it was published.SignificanceThis archive series is significant as the research material for John Bastock's two great naval history volumes - recording the British Royal Navy ships which were responsible for the maritime security of the early colonies, and the subsequent formation of the Royal Australian Navy and the ships that have served from 1911 to 1975.
