DescriptionPhotograph of a photographic spread that appeared in pictorial weekly newspaper The Queenslander, Thursday 12 October 1933 (page 20). The spread featured two images titled 'The Barque DANIEL' (left) and 'The Barque RAUPO'.HistoryLOUSIA CRAIG was built at Kinghorn in Fifeshire in 1876 and launched as PERU. In 1907 the vessel was acquired on behalf of J. J. Craig, Auckland, and renamed LOUISA CRAIG after Mr Craig's mother. LOUISA CRAIG operated as a sister ship to JAMES CRAIG (now residing with the Sydney Heritage Fleet) for the next decade. In 1916 LOUISA CRAIG was sold to G. H. Scales, Wellington, as a trader and was renamed RAUPO. In 1922 the vessel was sold to the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company for use as a coal hulk.SignificanceThe Hall photographic collection provides an important pictorial record of recreational boating in Sydney Harbour from the 1890s to the 1930s. The collection documents the lively sailing scene in Sydney during this period and features images of vessels ranging from large racing and cruising yachts to the great array of skiffs and the emerging technologies of motorboats. Images of many iconic vessels are also included in this visual record.
