HistoryJapanese tall ship KAIWO MARU, along with sister ship NIPPON MARU, was built as a training ship for merchant marine cadets and launched on 14 February 1930. KAIWO MARU travelled several times around the globe and visited Australia in 1936. As a training ship KAIWO MARU operated for 59 years and trained over 11,000 sailors. In 1989 the KAIWO MARU was replaced by a new, more modern vessel of the same name and is now exhibited in Kaiwo Maru Park, Imizu, Toyama, Japan.SignificanceThe Hall photographic collection provides an important pictorial record of recreational boating in Sydney Harbour from the 1890s to the 1930s. The collection documents the lively sailing scene in Sydney during this period and features images of vessels ranging from large racing and cruising yachts to the great array of skiffs and the emerging technologies of motorboats. Images of many iconic vessels are also included in this visual record.
