HistoryARISTIDES was built in 1876 by Walter Hood & Co. of Aberdeen for the Aberdeen White Star Line. Commodore of the fleet, Captain R. Kemball, previously of THERMOPYLAE, was given command of ARISTIDES and the vessel became the firm's flagship.
ARISTIDES sailed regularly between England and Australia carrying cargo and often with a full passenger list. In May 1903, under the command of Captain Poppy, ARISTIDES disappeared while on route from Caleta Buna to San Francisco with a cargo of nitrate.SignificanceThe Hall photographic collection provides an important pictorial record of recreational boating in Sydney Harbour from the 1890s to the 1930s. The collection documents the lively sailing scene in Sydney during this period and features images of vessels ranging from large racing and cruising yachts to the great array of skiffs and the emerging technologies of motorboats. Images of many iconic vessels are also included in this visual record.
