DescriptionThis Ship's bell comes from the MV MITTAGONG. The MITTAGONG was an iron ore carrier, owned by Bulkships Pty Ltd who operated between 1963 - 1982.HistoryThe MV MITTAGONG was built by BHP Whyalla Shipyard for Bulkships Limited, Melbourne in 1963. MITTAGONG was an iron ore carrier that transported ore from Whyalla to Port Kembla and Newcastle. MITTAGONG was chartered by BHP Ltd in 1976 for three years and renamed IRON MITTAGONG. After completing 100 voyages for BHP, MITTAGONG returned to Bulkships Limited at Snails Bay, Sydney in March 1982 as MV MITTAGONG. In July 1982, MV MITTAGONG was sold to Monti Cia Naviera SA in Panama and was renamed SHALINI. SHALINI was scrapped in Pakistan in December 1982.SignificanceShips bells have an iconic almost spiritual association with ships and the sea. They were the voice of the ship; used to record time; and to call the crew to action and sailing stations.
