DescriptionA passenger ticket issued to Mrs Smith and her 11 year old daughter for passage on the Aberdeen and Commonwealth Line vessel the SS JERVIS BAY from Sydney to Hobart in February 1933.HistoryThis ticket was issued to a Mrs Smith and her 11 year old daughter for passage on the Aberdeen and Commonwealth Line vessel the SS JERVIS BAY from Sydney to Hobart in February 1933. The JERVIS BAY was a Commonwealth Government Line steamer. The Government line was formed in 1916 from captured German ships and continued after World War I with the construction of five 'Bay' vessels, including the JERVIS BAY, designed to assist in British-Australia passenger operations. In 1928 the government decided to sell the ships and the JERVIS BAY was on the last voyage of the line to Britain when there was a reported mutiny on board. After assistance from the British Navy, the 'mutiny' of eight stowaways who had burnt their cabin in protest at being handed over to the authorities, was quelled. The vessel continued to operate from the UK under the Aberdeen and Commonwealth Line until World War II, when it was converted to an armed merchant vessel and was sunk in a gallant action protecting a convoy from a German battleship.SignificanceThe SS JERVIS BAY was a prominent passenger vessel transporting British migrants to Australia between the wars.
