By Mrs Andrew Fisher on 30th Sept., 1915. General manager JJ King Salter Esq. RCNC'.HistoryHMAS BRISBANE was one of the first cruisers built for the Royal Australian Navy. It was as one of the Chatham group of the British Town Class and in 1916 left for war service in the Mediterranean. Later, while searching for the notorious raider, SMS WOLF, BRISBANE became the first Australian naval ship to be involved in naval aviation when a seaplane was assigned to assist in the search for the German vessel. Unsuccessful in this northern region, HMS BRISBANE continued the search in the Western Pacific during 1918 until the war's end on 11 November 1918. After an extensive refit in Portsmouth in 1919 arriving back in Sydney in June. BRISBANE remained in Australian waters for the rest of her career, with brief periods abroad for specific events in the Pacific and serving as a naval training ship. In May 1935 HMAS BRISBANE returned to England where it was paid off on 24 September 1935. SignificanceHMAS BRISBANE, along with HMAS MELBOURNE and SYDNEY, were the first cruisers built for the Royal Australian Navy.
