DescriptionThis adults entrance ticket for the men's change room at Cronulla surf club originally cost threepence, and dates from the 1920s.HistoryThe Cronulla club house was built in 1909, and had lockers and changing rooms for members. By the 1920's Cronulla was portraying itself as the resort of the south, with the club house becoming a major focus of the beach.
Issues of propriety and decency remained prominent throughout the first half of the 20th century, with concerns around sunbathing and the brevity of early women's woollen swimsuits, which often shrank from use. In 1922 there was a movement against people walking the streets in their swimwear, with Sutherland Shire Council referring the matter to the police.SignificanceThis ticket provides details on the entrance price to change rooms in the 1920s and the practice of using change rooms rather than changing at the beach.
