DescriptionA framed assemblage of wooden cut-outs by Adelaide based artist David Bromley titled 'The Collection’ (5/40). This work was exhibited with other works by Tim Olsen Gallery, Paddington Sydney in 2003. The work depicts child-like wooden cut-out profiles of commercial ships and several yachts painted in one blue, two green and 15 orange with black pen details.HistoryDavid Bromley's is an Australian artist who takes inspiration for much of his work from childhood images of the 1930's to 1950's. These particularly derive from illustrations from children’s books in the style of a Boys Own Adventure series. There is also much of the everyday and domestic environment in Bromely's work, such as toys, the kitchen or playing outdoors. Toy boats, cars and planes appear frequently and often are assembled from wooden cut-outs. SignificanceThe work presents a playful and child-like depiction of commercial and leisure ship profiles and reflects David Bromley's interest in reinterpreting 1930s boys-own adventure story book imagery.
