DescriptionView of Hobart Town from the east based on artwork by Louis Auguste de Sainson.SignificanceLouis Auguste de Sainson (1801-1887) was the principal artist on board the ASTROLABE during Dumont d'Urville's first voyage to the Pacific (1826 - 29) The ASTROLABE sailed to the Pacific by way of the Cape of Good Hope and Australia. After short stays in King George Sound and in Port Jackson the 'corvette' sailed to New Zealand, Tonga, Fiji, New Ireland, New Britain and northern New Guinea before heading south to Hobart where the crew spent Christmas in 1827. This illustration is an important record of that visit.
