HistoryBorn in 1957, Peter Treseder began his wilderness activities in 1965. Over the next 10 years he undertook a number of trips, building his skills and confidence before embarking on his next 25 years of pioneering and endurance efforts. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Queen's Scout Award in 1975, and three Australian Geographic Society Spirit of Adventure Awards.
In July 1994 Peter embarked from Darwin to attempt the first crossing of the Timor Sea by kayak, while on leave from the Commonwealth Bank. He was inspired by the WWII covert operations Rimau and Jaywick carried out by Australians from the KRAIT, a Japanese fishing boat. Operatives left the KRAIT in kayaks. Peter wanted to test whether it was possible to cross the Timor Strait in the same way by kayak, and whether these WWII operatives could have reached Australia if need be.
A week into his crossing Peter was attached by pirates and dragged onto their boat. He was beaten, bound and held captive. By overpowering two guards Peter was able to escape in his German made Folbot kayak under the cover of darkness. In fear of his life he successfully re-crossed the Timor Sea and was picked up by fishermen off Bathurst Island.SignificanceThe briefs were worn by Peter Treseder, forming part of the clothing and equipment used during his double crossing of the Timor Sea by kayak in July 1994.
