The SCOTTISH ADMIRAL was a three masted iron barque, built in 1878 and sunk in 1894 after a collision.HistoryThe SCOTTISH ADMIRAL was a two deck iron barque built in 1878 by W. Doxford & Sons of Sunderland for McIlwraith MacEacharn & Co. of London. In February 1894, while at anchor in the Medway, SCOTTISH ADMIRAL was struck by HMS EDINBURGH and sunk in deep water. The steam steering gear of HMS EDINBURGH gave out but battleship received no damage. SignificanceMcIlwraith McEacharn Limited originated in London in 1875, going on to become one of the largest and most successful companies operating in Australia throughout the following century.
