DescriptionThis coin is one of several hundred objects recovered from the wreck of the ZUYTDORP, a Dutch East India Company vessel wrecked off the Western Australian coast in 1712.HistoryThe National Maritime Collection at the Australian National Maritime Museum includes hundreds of objects recovered from sites on the western coast of Australia where four Dutch ships were wrecked between 1629 and 1727. The objects from the VOC (Dutch United East India Company) ships BATAVIA (1629), VERGULDE DRAECK (1656), ZUYTDORP (1712) and ZEEWIJK (1727) are amongst the oldest European material in the museum's Collection and a tangible reference to the part played by Dutch mariners in the discovery, exploration and mapping of Australia in the 17th and 18th centuries.SignificanceAssociated with the wreck of the Dutch ship ZUYTDORP discovered on the Australian coast this silver coin is representative of European presence near the Australian continent in the 18th century.
