DescriptionLieutenant Desmond Aubrey Menlove joined HMAS ADELAIDE on 1 September 1939 following the general mobilisation of the Royal Australian Navy Reserve at the start of WWII. He served on HMAS ADELAIDE as a signals officer and later as a navigator to August 1941. He was promoted to Lieutenant Commander in August 1940 during his period of service on the ship.SignificanceThis material forms part of a large collection of photgraphs and other records of Desmond Menlove's career in the Royal Australian Navy Reserve as well as his career in merchant shipping. Desmond Menlove was famous for his role in sinking the first Japanese submarine in World War II, as Lieutenant Commander of HMAS DELORAINE. He also commanded HMAS KAPUNDA and HMAS LATROBE during World War II.
